I know what you mean. I lived in Tokyo for four years. Once you get into your everyday routine, the wonder and marvel you experienced at every turn when you landed, somehow seems to fade. The only way to prolong the honeymoon for me, was to take lots of regular trips, outside of the city, into rural Japan, or outside of the country.

That said, city life in Tokyo bears little of the assault on senses that India seems to. I'm tempted to get to Mumbai to see for myself.

Look forward to the photo's. Keep blogging!

Melanie, I really appreciate your point about it not being fair to waste people's time on issues that are not going to improve their lives. Very thoughtful. Wish all politicians would remember that!

Hi,

Happy new year!! (or is it sober new year?). I am sorry, you ended up with a page 3 celebrity party. I am a regular reader of your blogs for as long you have had it. You are an American in India, and I am an Indian in America. Our experiences sometimes cannot be any more strikingly different.

I have been living in the U.S.A for six years now. I can say for sure that, only this year I was invited for a New year party!! In the past, my friends at work and in real life have always enjoyed my company as a colleague, but never for socializing.

Based on your writing it seems to me that, India and its people welcomed you with both hands, embraced you and let you identify their warts and all. I am afraid, I have had any experience anything closer to that.

People never invite us (international students) to any party that is exclusively either american or european. I am not suggesting that they are anything exclusive or racist. I am simply stating our contradicting experiences. Compared to me, you are having a ball!! You attended a party without even knowing your host, I have
colleagues discuss their weekend plans without wanting to know, if I would like to experience their culture.

If you ever visit Chicago, please do visit the south side, where people live almost in third world standards.

You have a wonderful blog, and I enjoy reading it. I just thought I will let you how it is for a ferringhee in America. Take care.

Hi there
Glad that you sound so cheerful to be back. I just returned after a short trip to Mumbai. Had my fill of the Marine Lines view, had a nice lunch at the revolving restaurant at the Ambassador and hogged on the roadside vada pav. Enjoy ur stay

***** I couldn't post it at Mangal Pandey Blog************
Everytime I read a any of your blog I cannot help commenting about it :).

To start with do you know the kind of people who used to come as representatives of East India Company? In many a times people who used to come here didn't have a nice time at england ( Unlike these days where people just migrate because they love the country...reminds me of a UK millionaire who have chosen to stay with Masaih tribe of Africa ).
This is analogous to convicted British people being sent to Australia. So the kind of pople who used to come in administrative posts, many of them were not liberal... even today you would find in firms having ittle corporate social responsibility). So its not normal that there would be some guys who would be oppressive and may have actually killed people.

Now for the movie . I am trying to visualise you as very sensitive person who wept. I saw the movie and got very charged up. But after moving out of the theatre I realised that the movie didn't have any strong script except for some dramatic situations. Most of the story seems to be cooked up ( except for "British East India Company murdering Indian civilians" ...:P..sorry I am kidding) or made fit to be a movie.

And to my delight and surprise I found the film has been sponsored by UK film Council. Daily Mirror ( or someother news paper with the name mirror in it in UK) is writing strong reviews against it. You are watching the movie liking some parts disliking some parts In India. I am outside India watching it from UK and writing critiques. It goes on and on.....

In the end ...I guess you are doing justice to your job or to yourself...Cross cultural Communication.

Thanks

Hi,
I just came to check my own comments and found full of mistakes and misspelled words where as your comment was neat and clean. Clearly stating everything yet diplomatic. I didn't have anything to write back.
Today i watched another Indian movie " Jo sapnay mein aaya" ( One who came in dreams). Its just like one of those movies which you have watched all the time ( sorry :P). but now and again these movies are coming all the time and would keep on coming in future as well. Its about rediscovering true indian identity / culture having stayed in US/Uk for long time. But I guess there's no harm in watching them for the sake of entertainment. We had limited entertainment opportunities back in India or may be we still are not in that mode of back packers and moving around the world ( again economy and society is behind this). So when you watch these movies you can write they are all the same story but you should know that we also feel the same but many of these movies become hit as I and my friends don't represent Indian common masses. So although its silly but yet it keeps on happening. If you keep watching them bollywwod movies you would find group of directors /producers produce everything in films which is just as good as scenic places

I haven't watched the maratha movie.

I don't know If you would like Satyajit Ray movies. They are old ones. He got life time achievement award as well ( Oscar ) but first he was recognised in Cannes film festival . I never liked it when i was kid. May be now if i see them I may like it. You may watch them. For a change I would learn about our movies from you :).

Hi...Its seems you have been watching all those movies which have been made for common people. I am not sure about your back gnd but its true ( now it seems as i look back ) teh only goal of Indian cinema is to get married. Do you know why?
Cinemas movies enable us to dream. When we have so much problem in India ( now I realise it more after starting to stay in London for more than six months) that these simple things strike people. Now I know that why every foreigner when they go to India take pictures of cows in streets , or unclad street kids or some other pictures which expresses the life about poverty distress and hunger and is appreciated when he comes back to her world of human rights , enclosed bus , planned trips 999 ambulance helps. The movies name you mentioned are some of those generic Movies I disliked most had i stayed in India ( but at london I have seen mostl of them). Try to see Parinita . its a film produced by Vidhu vindho chopra. Its also about getting married ( apparently) but inside you find some strong characters. Well I thhought I woudl ask you ..in fact thats why i was looking for putting a comment..this design of your blog and the apperance of this webpage I liked.

Did you buy something to make it like this or is it all free?

Thanks And Regards

Anthony Renzulli, I wish to petition you and your parents for an annulment of the unauthorized and unsactioned marriage to my daughter Melanie. Please see to this matter as soon as possible. As of yet, you have not acknowledged my existence. I need a Son-in-Law that is CHIVALROUS and not a COWARD.

P.S. Happy Birthday Melanie

I guess the worst has passed. That is a crazy amount of rain. Communication lines seem to be pretty patchy ... took me all morning and a good part of the afternoon before i could reach my sister. Thankfully they're all home and safe. Although many many others are stranded all over the city.

Hope you've managed to enjoy getting drenched in the showers. When there's nothing else to do ... might as well enjoy the monsoon and get soaked :)

wow.. i wish we would have known about this show!! my boyfriend works in the film industry here. but your blog inspired us to look online for bollywood posters - which we've wanted for a while. and we found a good website from delhi that has some authentic stuff auctioned off - all proceeds going to charity. its more expensive probably than finding it on the street somewhere, but we know its real and its for a good cause.. now just waiting to see if we won our bid! (but we actually settled on an old 50's ad poster rather than film).

i wanted to go see rishi rish when they played here, but no one would go with me :(

i haven't bought bombay rockers yet, but i do like most of the songs on there.

my favorites at the moment are still some older ones - Dhoom Machale and Mahi Ve (from Kal Ho Na Ho).

we live across from olive so i get to hear all the latest bollywood songs often enough that i get too lazy to actually buy the cds (or figure out what song it was and what cd to find it on!)

you should join the bombay expats group... i'm bound and determined to meet you in person someday ;) if you do a search on yahoo groups you'll find it!

yeah i don't think monsoon is exaggerated either!! this is my second one and so far seems worse than last year at this time. or perhaps its because i don't have a car and driver this year ;)

and the heat... i can't believe you didn't feel that it was unbearable somedays. taking the train and then having to walk in the mid afternoon heat was miserable. i was raised in texas and am "used" to heat, but there as in many other hot places you have ac every other step.

maybe you are a true indian at heart if you can love the april-june heat!

well my take on the whole "indians suck at sports" thing - parents still tend to push academics before sports. there's not much of a concept of sports scholarships. other than the 12-15 national team cricketers ... there isnt really too much money in sports in india .. well not yet anyways.

so as the kids are growing up ... there isnt much support from families to take up sports with the intent of having it as a career. sports is still considered a 2 hr daily exercise and nothing more. the end aim is to do well at school ... get a good degree and look forward to a decent job.

and this wont change till more money pours into sport. corporate sponsorhip needs to come in even at the lower level .. not just for the national cricket team and for the tendulkars and yuvrajs. there need to be more money ar the junior level, more of an awareness that sports as a career can be paying. till then we'll still just be happy to see someone get past the first round at wimbledon.

hmm Bombay monsoon is not exaggerated. as kids we had a whole separate monsoon wardrobe ... raincoats, rain boots / shoes, umbrellas, plastic covers on books ...

when i went to northern india for university, part of my luggage included my rain boots. needless to say i got laughed at. no one there had even heard of rain boots. and in 4 years, i never had to use an umbrella even once.

but bombay rains are a whole lot of fun. to enjoy ... walk along marine drive during a good rain. make sure u take ur umbrella and watch urself get soaked :) ... and the wind will turn the umbrella upside down ... fun fun

Hello Mel,
I've been going through blogs of many tourists and visitors to india recently. surely, india provides a variety of cultural colors to describe them in words. This is a nation of exceptions, contradictions, struggles and compromises. I'm a chemical engineer working for a publishing software IT company based in Chandigarh (North India). This city is well designed and planned by a swiss archetect and has its picture inscribed on swiss 5 franc currency note. Would you like to take a shot at visiting this city and for once get a glimpse of normal, stenchless and clean environs that exist in india!
i'll be glad to assist you.
regards,
sanjeev
